Working for an Indian Startup - The Upside

The Career of a Holiday Rep

The Definition of a Holiday Rep

The main role of a holiday rep is to ensure 100 per cent customer satisfaction while they are on their vacation. You are the representative of the tour company and so how you present yourself and look after the customer creates an impression of the company. This will often determine if the customer will use your tour operator in the future. There are also different types of reps that you can become at a holiday resort. These includes: a holiday rep, childrenò€™s rep, transfer rep and entertainment rep and club rep. While each job differs in terms of their responsibilities, for example as a club rep you will be based at younger resorts and looking after younger holiday makers, the selection process is still the same.

The Requirements to Become a Holiday Rep

The qualifications required to become a holiday rep really depend on the type of rep you are looking to become. For example, if you are looking to become a childrenò€™s rep most tour operators look for a qualification in child care and some experience in looking after children. There is also a minimum age requirement of 18 for the majority of resorts with a few requiring the rep to be 21 years old.

In terms of qualifications the tour operators generally look for good grades at GCSE level, normally 5 GCSEò€™s grade A-C or any corresponding qualification. Qualifications such as A-levels are seen as additional qualifications to support you in your application but are not a requirement for the role. The recruitment team will also look more favourable on those candidates that can speak a second language, especially if they are looking to go to a country where they can speak the national language. However, it should be pointed out the speaking another language is not a requirement and many candidates have successfully passed the recruitment day without this.

The Best Time to Apply

One of the best times to apply to become a holiday rep is from November or March but the recruitment team have been known to carry on hiring candidates all the way up to June or even July for that summer. So make sure you are always keeping an eye out for which companies are hiring.Ò  The best place to find vacancies is to search the tour companyò€™s websites for the latest vacancies or jobs. The will also usually have an application form on their websites for you to either download or complete online.

However, during the months of November to March the recruitment process is very competitive as many candidates apply for arguably one of the best jobs. The endless travel opportunities, the freedom from the 9-5 job, the people and the nice hot weather make this one of the jobs that people dream of becoming.

After you have completed your application form you may receive a phone call or letter in the post asking you to come for an assessment day. Not matter what rep you want to become you still need to pass the assessment day. During this assessment day you will to take part in group exercises, presentations, tests and finally a one on one interview. You will need to pass each section successfully for them to offer you the job. The key to this is being prepared for the recruitment day and doing your research on the company..
