Save Your Resume From Suffocation With White Space

White space is the empty area between elements in a page layout.ч  In the case of a resume, it is the space between blocks of text.ч  This space serves a number of functions in the context of a resume.ч  It creates a more aesthetically pleasing appearance and organizes your information.

While it may be tempting to fill as much of the page up as possible with the text of your resume, this is not a good strategy.ч  Lots of text crammed together creates a more frustrating reading experience, as the reader has to mentally sort through the information presented.ч  With adequate margins and spacing between sections, the information has been sorted for the reader.ч  This allows the concentration to be on the actual content.

Organizational skills are a must for many positions, and certainly a plus for most.ч  A good way to present yourself as someone with this capability is to submit an organized resume.ч  Margins that give some space from the edge of the page bring more focus to your content.ч  It becomes a unit in the center of the page, rather than words spread across a page.ч  Space between sections is important as well.ч  It allows both the human eye and scanning software to distinguish between categories of information on the page.ч  This kind of spacing gives your resume a cleaner, more polished look.

Proximity is an important visual design concept to consider when creating white space.ч  Items on a page that are closer together give the impression that they are related.ч  Therefore, it is important to make sure that items in the same section are closer together.ч  Try not to put more than one empty line, or carriage return, between each item in a section.ч  Between sections, put at least two empty lines.ч  Finally, keep your margins between 1" and 1.25".ч  Just make sure your margins are larger than the gaps between sections.ч  This will maintain the visual cohesion of the entire resume.

By creating white space on your page, you will give your information room to breathe.ч  It will give the reader"s eyes a rest and frustration-free reading experience.ч  And since the reader will have the fate of your new job in their hands, you cannot afford any frustration.ч  Save your resume from suffocation and possibly save your chance at a new job in the process.
