Sales Roles Explained
Sales professionals may be required to work in the UK and overseas, in sectors such as FMCG, IT, media, services and consumer durables. As the commercial success of a company depends on how successful its sales team are, those in sales jobs are required to be highly personable, honest and driven individuals.A typical day in sales may involve arranging meetings, researching markets, going to trade shows, negotiating contracts, presenting for new sales, maintaining a good working relationship with clients or advising on promotions. Most sales jobs are target based, with commission allocated on an individual"s or team"s performance.
Starting salaries are generally upwards of £17,000, with salaries at senior level reaching up to figures of £100,000. Working hours are usually long, due to the high pressured nature of the job and as such, require people who enjoy thriving on adrenalin. Sales professionals must look tidy at all times and most are required to wear a suit when liaising with clients. The work is fast-paced but highly rewarding where one can see quick results and deal with different people on a daily basis.
Training is normally performed in house, shadowing other sales executives or completing the Institute of Sales and Marketing Management (ISMM) qualifications.
Career progression prospects are good, with many successful people moving into senior or managerial positions within a couple of years. Additionally, some sales professionals move into the fields of PR and Advertising to gain more industry experience and diversify their skills base.
