Global Recruitment Trends

In earlier days a person who wanted to find job had to buy a news paper and read the classified ads section then had to print out hard copy of resume and send them out. If some one calls you, itò€™s ok but most of the times there was no reply. It was a hectic process and all done by manually.

E-spying on Potential Candidates

This is a subject that I have been dying to write about with the coming of the Facebooks, MySpace, YouTube etc. I am going to coin this as E-Spying. I have been doing recruiting for well over 12 years and I guess I wish this option was available then BUT is it really fair? (See some of the votes on our New Media Hire blog poll).

How job agencies and bribe takers slow down your potential for a job in Kenya

Job seekers have their ongoing version of pyramid schemes all over the place in the form of officers asking for bribes, fake job agencies and international job scams.

Whenever I talk about speed in finding a job, there are many people out there who look at speed in terms of days and weeks. Depending on the inner psyche of the job seeker, three months is way too long and a month is even longer.

An inner state of "I do not have time" creates a false state of urgency which is what all con artists thrive on. They sell you the need to do something and do it now lest Armageddon come upon you in the next two minutes.

It is all a game intended to make you lose the power of clear minded thinking.

A job, your life and all that you will ever be happens one minute at a time. It is not the way that you spend the month that is crucial, it is the way you spend the minute that determines how the month will unfold.

The way the quick fix solutions work out

Let us take two people who both completed college or university late last year. They then happily went for the December holiday, partied themselves sick and then walked into January 2010 with a job as the plan on their mind.

They are both from the same backgrounds more or less, and neither is higher placed in society than the other. They also have basic skills and neither has a unique degree. However, they each took a different path.

Person one, let us call him Oliver, listened to a lot of talk among his family and friends in December and was frightened at the thought of joblessness which he was sure was his lot. So come January, he made a straight line for the agency that most people were talking about. He believed that since there were so many people there, the agency must know something.

Come February, there was no hope for a job at all. Come March there was still no whiff of a job, but he had changed agencies to another that was much talked about too. At the first one, he had left one thousand shillings poorer and at this second one, he had already parted with some two thousand shillings.

Come April, he was starting to feel sure that joblessness was his lot. He started a new agenda; to find another agency that was going to get him job for sure.

He has started to get angry at relatives who he knows hold positions of some authority. Why can"t they just give him a job and he needs one? By May, his family being ten to fifteen thousand shillings poorer for paying job agencies and fraudulent officers will not contribute one more cent to his job search. So now he is stuck in the depressing task of finding another agency who will give him the service of helping him find a job for free.

Come July, he is still without a job, roams the streets hoping to find someone that will suddenly offer him a job, and has spent all his family good-will and is depressed on top of it all.

The long route that is sure, fast and cost effective

Yes! That heading has no error. There is a long route that is sure yet cost effective.

Let us now look at how the second graduate, let us call him Bernard, arranged his affairs. He took a long route that was far much faster than the short route.

Come January after partying himself sick to celebrate being out of college, he made his first stop a date with an outstanding job search and career Mentor like myself. He did not have too much money since his family are not well to do, so he decided he would take some time and read a little even if he was not going to sit an exam. Getting a job he figured was exam enough.

He calmly and carefully crafted a job strategy as guided. Then he started acting on a daily basis on his plan. Come late February early March, he had secured himself a part-time assignment and was even paid some paltry shillings for good measure. Nothing to write home about, but it gave him courage and confidence.

His family, seeing the possible positive outcome of his plan and activities, were very supportive. They even became his campaign "activists" because he knew exactly how to get them to support his job search.

By the end of March, which is a long time according to the do it before Armageddon supporters, he had clear leads and had been invited to a couple of interviews. By the end of April, he had a definite job promise and by June he had a job.

Come August he had recovered all the money he had spent on purchasing strategic Quick Read titles, (an amount that is nowhere close to ten or even fifteen thousand) and is now happily planning his next move towards a promotion in due season. He was well armed in this game of employment.

By the way, if anyone ever spends money equivalent to buying 40 Quick Read titles on this site and on job search and career, please tell me. I will refund the money personally! In fact, if you ever spend money on this site within the same category without tangible results as promised in the Quick Read title, I will personally give you a refund!

Even getting wind of someone who has spent 3grand without tangible take-it-to-the-bank-results will have me extremely concerned. I am in the work of giving counsel you can use to get tangible results efficiently.

The difference in results is obvious

Fast forward five years later, Oliver is depressed, has a job in a factory as a casual worker because that is all the act before Armageddon supporters could deliver and is still depressed. According to him, there are no jobs in Kenya and that is why he is doing causal work as a graduate.

Bernard was recently promoted at his second job which had a double salary on his first job and has moved out of his parent"s home. Has moved from his first residence in the not-so-good part of town to the this-is-much-better part of town. And he has a well-provided for wife and family to boot.

According to him, he hears of a new job opening every six months or so, but he is happy with the one he has. Thank you!

Sasa wewe, jiamulie!
