E-spying on Potential Candidates
Let"s consider a few things on both sides of the table:1) If you actually did see one of your potential candidates doing drugs, passed out from a wild night or dealing with cult groups, would you really hire them. I know that might be going a bit far but really?
2) Is it legal to deny someone a position because you found out something "behind closed doors" that had nothing to do with their work life?
3) Would you be concerned that the negative information you do find out would be detrimental to your business?
4) How would you feel if they wanted to check you out as a hiring authority?
5) If you don"t do this, then how could you have prevented a bad hire if this hire negatively impacts the business?
I have a little story! I did the usual reference check and my client did a full background investigation on a candidate that was hired. Little did we know that this person was a little on wild side and literally decided to harass the women but at an overnight training ran down the hall in a drunken stupor in his underwear. Yes this did really happen. I was HORRIFIED!
Maybe people don"t feel that the internet is real. Now with I don"t know how much is this crazy obsession to get 15 minutes of fame or need to be accepted is so strong by the younger generation that they do not care about the future of their professional life by allowing a lot of this hit the internet or not but everyone should know regardless of age, that these needs can very well come with real ramifications.
All of this to say, do we use everything we can to prevent a bad hire or are the stakes just not that high?
